Packing List

This packing list is nothing crazy, but it’s one of the questions I get asked the most often, so I wanted to have a place to “dock” it. I keep my packing list in the Things 3 app.

As a side note, if you use the Things 3 app, here’s how I set it up: I have “an area” called Travel, and within that “area”, I have a “project” called Packing List.

Because of the way the app sets up “projects”, I can see how much I have left to pack via the progress wheel. Within the “project”, I have 5 headings: Backpack, Crossbody, Clothing, Electronics, and Toiletries.

Since I am not currently planning for a trip, all of the items are logged. When I AM planning for a trip, I just scroll through the list and “uncheck” the items that I’ll need for that particular trip. The app will prompt you to “mark as incomplete”.

The item will then go back to the category it came from.

It doesn’t take long at all to “make” the list each time, and best of all, I don’t really need to think about it. The one thing I DO change each time is how many t-shirts, pairs of socks, etc. I need, depending on trip length.

Please keep in mind that I NEVER pack all of these items – sometimes it’s a long trip, sometimes short. Sometimes we’ll be going to a lot of nice restaurants or hiking or swimming. Sometimes the weather will be cold and rainy, sometimes hot and humid. I just have EVERYTHING I can think of on this list, and only add the specific items I’ll need for any given trip.

I have the list sorted by where the item goes in my luggage. For longer trips, I typically bring 3 bags – a backpack, a crossbody purse, and a larger, checked bag. The backpack and crossbody give me flexibility for the plane/airport, plus gives me flexibility at our destination – some days I just bring the crossbody out with me, and other days, I just bring the backpack.

You can find my absolute favorite travel items here.
